When you can't garden, well garden anyway...

The garden here is about 6 weeks old and full of tomatoes and other good stuff. It's amazing to see what was planted in the 4-hour period we had to cultivate and plant the garden. Soozie is a wizard with a cultivator, she's a hard worker. The garden was carved out, dropped in and then off to the old place to pick up another load with the moving van--across two states.

With every other thing that needs to be done around here, we've not been able to carve out time to make the garden bigger. So after some discussion, it was decided to use containers. They are strewn about on the side deck and east lawn border. And the containers are of the "all sorts" category. Reused pots, buckets, tubs, baskets of all sizes.

What's in those containers--basil - lots of it, onions, lettuce, dill, cabbage, brussels sprouts, mints, lemon thyme, summer savory, rosemary, strawberries, cilantro, parsley. Lovely...

New garden

Have planted a new garden in a new place to call home. Spot was fallow for a long, long time. But the wonderful news is that this particular yard was previously known for it's prolific production of fruits and veggies. The almost acre yard contains mature fruit trees.

Stay tuned for updates...we are still moving stuff across several states.

Well, here's the specifics

Eagerly looking forward to these workshops - as much as I'm looking forward to the snow leaving so I can stick my fingers in the dirt!

SPRING GARDENING WORKSHOPS

Three workshops are scheduled to teach the basics of home gardening through presentations and hands-on experience. Long-time gardeners and leaders of the Urban Garden Gang will teach various styles and methods of gardening, which require minimal or no tilling, are easy on the environment and make use of rain barrels. All sessions are held on Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. and are suitable for new gardeners or experienced gardeners look for new methods or styles.

Session I, April 23: Basic gardening skills – learn about raised beds, container gardens, square foot gardening and intensive gardening. Attendees will learn how to make seed starting containers from recycled newspaper.

Session II, May 7: Seed and plant exchange and barter – start or add to your seed and plant collection. Learn how to start your own plant sets and why it’s important to save and exchange or barter seeds. Attendees will start plant sets to take home with them and for use in the Woodland Dunes Friendship Garden, which benefits the Two Rivers Mishicot Ecumenical Pantry.

Session III, May 21: Rain barrels and garden preparation. Learn how to construct a rain barrel from a recycled 55 gallon drum. Weather permitting, work will begin on the Friendship Garden. Bring gloves, rakes, and shovels. If the weather is unsuitable for outdoor work, this session will move indoors.

For information on the Urban Garden Gang visit http://urbangardengathering.blogspot.com. To register for these sessions, contact Woodland Dunes at 793-4007. There is no fee, and preregistration is suggested.

Spring Meeting, or is it still a Winter Meeting?

Which ever.....

It's time to kick it into action.

There's a gang gathering at Stumpjack Coffee Company in Two Rivers on Saturday, February 7th at 10:00 a.m.

What are we doing? Well.........talking for sure. Maybe looking at seed catalogs (bring yours along), maybe exchanging seeds or giving seeds away. And, of course, having excellent coffee drinks and bakery.

Bring your friends, and your kids, and whomever.

Got questions? Leave a comment. I promise to check daily.

See ya Saturday.

What yah been reading recently?

Me? I'm reading seed catalogs. I love those little promises of produce that arrive in the mail. I've loved seed catalogs since I was a child and was able to beg an extra packet or two of some sort of exotic seed to plant in my little section of grandma's acre kitchen garden. Actually, I think grandma made me pay for those seeds.......

What have you been reading? What are you sending away for? I read the Jung's catalog also, but couldn't seem to insert a copy of the catalog cover.
